Wind turbine royalties help a Kansas rancher protect his family land

Fifty modern turbines spin across Pete Ferrell's 7,000-acre tallgrass prairie ranch in Beaumont, Kansas. Wind supplies steady income. Since the Elk River project launched in 2005, about half of Ferrell's income has come from wind royalties. "The big scary word in agriculture is drought," Ferrell said. The consistent earnings will help his two children and four grandchildren keep the ranch.

Ranching families gain dependable income to keep multi-generational land intact through severe droughts.
