The Great Yarmouth Malayalee Association (GYMA) handed nearly half a tonne of donated food to Great Yarmouth Foodbank on Thursday, October 22, at St Mary’s Church in Gorleston. Families across Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and surrounding areas contributed essential food items through a campaign organised with the foodbank in connection with World Food Day 2026.

Jennifer King, charity manager at Great Yarmouth Foodbank, said the size of the donation was unusual. “We rarely receive donations of this size and we recognise the commitment to the cause required to achieve such a quantity of food,” King said.

GYMA has been active in the area for more than 20 years and represents more than 200 families from Kerala, India. Many members work as healthcare professionals at James Paget University Hospital and other healthcare organisations in Norfolk.

Association president Abison Thomas said the campaign was a way to thank the community for its welcome and support. “Many of us came here from another part of the world, but today this is our home, and we are proud to be part of this wonderful local community,” Thomas said.

Thomas also thanked those who donated and organised the collection. “I am extremely proud of every GYMA family who contributed to this initiative and our dedicated committee members who worked tirelessly to make it possible.”

The donated food will support local families experiencing hardship.
