MIT student team advances to NASA moon-waste recycling finals

An MIT student team called CERBERUZ has earned Phase II Milestone prizes in both the Prototype and Digital Twin tracks of NASA's LunaRecycle Centennial Challenge, according to MIT AeroAstro. The team, formed in AeroAstro's Space Resources Workshop, built a system that grinds lunar waste such as thermoset foams and mixed thermoplastics into powder, then remakes it into parts using injection molding and 3D printing. Students will demonstrate the prototype and its companion digital modeling software live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in August 2026.
Astronauts living at a lunar outpost could turn their own waste into spare tools and life-support parts.
