MBARI scientists film ultra-rare bigfin squid off California coast

MBARI scientists and NOAA collaborators captured video of a deep sea bigfin squid (Magnapinna sp.) off the coast of Central California during a seamount expedition. The animal appeared by chance. It marks MBARI’s second sighting of the species and the first verified live observation in the Northeastern Pacific Ocean.
The sighting gives marine biologists a rare look at a little-studied deep-sea squid, adding to what scientists know about life in the Northeastern Pacific.
