Bride visits father in hospital for wedding day dance

Sinèad Jackson shared a wedding dance with her father on his hospital ward after heart problems kept him from attending her ceremony on 10 October. She arrived at Tameside General Hospital in her wedding dress, an hour before she was due to marry Stephen in Hyde, Greater Manchester. Her father, Leslie Healy, wore his wedding suit as they slow danced to This Dance, by Scott Thomas Laughridge.
Leslie had been admitted on 8 October. When Sinèad visited the following day, a nurse explained that leaving the ward, even for an hour, would be too risky. She could see he was unusually breathless.
The 36-year-old from Dukinfield had always dreamed of her father walking her down the aisle. He urged her to carry on with the wedding and said he would see the pictures and videos, but she wanted him to see the dress he had waited months for. Sinèad said she had four brothers and was the only daughter, making the moment a big deal for him.
After speaking with the nurses, she arranged to visit with her mum and wedding photographer Jen. They arrived at the acute cardiology unit, which treats heart conditions, at 15:00 GMT. Sinèad waited outside while Leslie got dressed, then her mum ushered them in.
Leslie kept saying sorry, she said, while she fought back tears. Staff took photographs and videos as she entered the ward. She thought some patients took pictures too.
The ceremony at the Village Hotel went smoothly despite her arriving a little late. Sinèad and Stephen met at college when they were both 17, had been together for 19 years and had been engaged since 2015. She said seeing her dad allowed her to relax. “My little man, Maxie, gave me away on behalf of his Grandad.”
Sinèad said she was glad her father was somewhere safe, with staff able to reach him if something happened.
