New Mexico utility hits 80% carbon-free power in five-year overhaul
The Public Service Company of New Mexico delivered 80% carbon-free electricity in 2025. Five years earlier, in 2021, coal and gas plants generated nearly 80% of the company's power. The utility put money into solar panels, batteries, and wind turbines. Solar runs fans and air conditioners during the day. After dark, batteries stored with solar energy keep lights on while wind turbines handle other loads. "We know it's the right thing," said Laurie Williams, PNM's senior vice president of integrated planning and transmission development. The company now expects to hit 100% zero-carbon electricity by 2040, five years ahead of the state's 2045 deadline under the 2019 Energy Transition Act.
