Terry Fox Run passes one billion dollars for cancer research
The Terry Fox Run has now raised more than C$1 billion for cancer research, the Terry Fox Research Institute reported in February 2026. The annual event started in 1981, a year after Fox ran partway across Canada on an artificial leg to raise money and awareness. Fox left St. John's, Newfoundland, in April 1980 and ran a marathon distance every day until cancer in his lungs forced him to stop outside Thunder Bay. He died nine months later. The run now draws millions of participants in more than 60 countries and is the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research.
Research funded by the event helps cancer patients around the world, all in the name of one runner who made it halfway across Canada before his disease stopped him.
