Over the October 2026 Thanksgiving weekend, youth coordinator Venn Morin and Whitecap Dakota First Nation in Saskatchewan hosted a youth community hunt and campout for six young community members aged 12 to 18. The event connected participants with local knowledge keepers to learn practical hunting and harvesting skills.

Morin, who learned to hunt as a child and reconnected with the practice after becoming a father to an 11-year-old and a 7-year-old, organized the outing to share traditional skills with youth across the community. "We wanted to provide youth with those same opportunities I had growing up, that they might not have," Morin said. "We want to teach youth those same skills, things that are essential to hunting safely."

"It ended up being a big success. We got a moose," Morin said. Following the harvest, Morin taught the youth every step of the meat preparation process within traditional protocols, including loading the moose onto and off a trailer, skinning the hide, gutting the animal, and preparing the meat.
