Five‑day sailing program boosts movement in teens with rare skeletal disorders

Eight adolescents, ages 12 to 18, with rare skeletal disorders completed a five‑day sailing program. The program combined physical activity on the water with social interaction and psychological reflection. The pilot study in Scientific Reports recorded 100 % retention and adherence, and participants rated acceptability at a mean of 3.75 (SD 0.46). Measurements from wearable inertial sensors showed significant improvements in proprioception (p = 0.01), postural control (p = 0.01), gait quality (p = 0.04) and upper‑limb function (p = 0.02). No serious adverse events were reported. Early trends pointed to higher quality‑of‑life scores and greater happiness among the teens.
Adolescents with rare skeletal disorders have few proven rehabilitation options; this study suggests a low‑risk sailing activity can improve physical function and wellbeing.
