Costa Rica project reconnects forest canopy for stranded sloths

The Connected Gardens Project in Costa Rica addresses rainforest micro-fragmentation, where buildings, roads, and infrastructure create small canopy gaps that block arboreal species from moving through the forest. The project works with landowners to plant trees and install wildlife bridges, creating biological corridors across properties. Community members receive training as citizen scientists and choose which trees to plant based on ecological benefits. The initiative has reconnected 8,000 hectares of fragmented rainforest and achieved an 82 percent reduction in wildlife conflict in target areas.
Micro-fragmentation goes almost undetected by satellite monitoring but can fragment rainforests as severely as large-scale deforestation when thousands of small land-use changes accumulate.
