Animated video shares Indigenous oral history of Toronto
Selena Mills and Sara Roque released an animated video on September 18, 2019, that explores the Indigenous roots of Toronto through oral tradition. "My name is Sara Roque, I am mixed blood Anishinaabekwe from the community of Shebahonaning," Roque said in the video. The two creators want to give non-Indigenous allies a reference point when making local land acknowledgements. Their work honours seven generations of ancestors and seven generations of descendants.
Non-Indigenous residents of the Greater Toronto Area now have a reference point for understanding the land acknowledgements that are becoming more common across Canada.
