A retired school bus driver in rural Georgia spent eighteen months renovating two decommissioned yellow school buses into colorful, solar-powered mobile lending libraries for children living in book deserts.

Many rural farming families in the county live more than twenty miles from the nearest public library branch, making regular reading access difficult for young children during summer and weekends. The retired driver purchased the retired buses at a county surplus auction, removing passenger benches to install handcrafted pine bookshelves, beanbag reading corners, and solar-powered computer stations.

On September 27, 2026, county literacy coordinators reported that over eight hundred children borrowed books from the mobile libraries this autumn. "Seeing children run down the driveway shouting with excitement because the library bus has arrived is the greatest joy of my life," the driver told reporters. Local teachers volunteer on weekends to offer free reading tutoring aboard the bus.

The county library system has officially partnered with the project, providing a rotating stock of ten thousand new children's books and educational materials to keep the mobile library thriving.

Rural children without library access receive free lending books and reading tutoring directly at their country doorsteps.
