Orangeville’s Sewcial Stitchers have completed 120 handmade quilts for children in Ukrainian orphanages, citizen.on.ca reported on October 22, 2026. The group of 22 quilters began work in July, initially understanding that it might be asked for about a dozen quilts. The donation will travel with supplies in a shipping container organized through St. Demetrius the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church in Etobicoke.

The project began after a member with Ukrainian roots learned that the church was preparing a shipment for Ukraine.

“So she mentioned that they were filling shoe boxes, and when the church heard that we were a quilting group, they asked if we could make some little quilts to go with these shoe boxes of things for the children. So we said yes, we could do that,” member Penny Squirrel said.

Members devoted much of their available quilting time to meeting the shipment deadline. They chose their own patterns and designs to suit children of different ages and interests.

Now entering its third year, the group also makes quilts for Project Linus, which distributes blankets to children experiencing difficult circumstances, and for young adults leaving foster care and setting up their first homes.

For Dufferin Child and Family Services (DCAFS), members sew fabric bags that carry children’s belongings and unfold into small quilts. Squirrel said the project grew from concern about foster children moving between homes with their possessions in green garbage bags.

The group also contributes quilted items to church fundraisers and makes dignity quilts used at local long-term care homes, including Avalon Care Centre and Dufferin Oaks.

New members and donations of 100 per cent cotton fabric for quilt fronts are welcome. The Sewcial Stitchers meet at noon on the first and third Friday of each month at Centre Fellowship Church’s cafe, near Hansen Street and Blind Line.

The quilts will be distributed to children in orphanages across Ukraine for St. Nicholas Day in early December.
