Miniature horse Henry survives dog attack to reach old age

In June 2016, Michael Shepherd and police officers rescued a miniature horse named Henry after two dogs attacked the animal overnight. Henry, one of two horses owned by Christine Shepherd of Travellers Rest, sustained significant facial injuries. The attending veterinarian did not expect the horse to survive and arrived prepared to put him down, but the couple refused.
The veterinarian said she would give the couple the weekend to say their goodbyes to him, then returned on Tuesday. Mrs Shepherd said the veterinarian stated that Henry must know how much the couple loved him, and how much he loved them. Henry survived.
The Shepherds had to continually clean his face and give him daily injections for three months.
