MahoganyBooks opens a shop in Anacostia after years without a bookstore

MahoganyBooks now has a storefront. Derrick and Ramunda Young opened the physical location for their 10-year-old bookstore inside Washington, D.C.'s Anacostia Arts Center, a neighborhood that had gone years without a bookstore of its own. Researchers led by New York University professor Susan B. Neuman found in a 2016 study that only one book was for sale for every 830 children in Anacostia. "Who better to invest in our people than us?" said Derrick, 40, who spent his childhood visiting his grandmother in the neighborhood.
Children and families in Anacostia gain direct access to reading material in their own neighborhood.
