Gardener in Denmark unearths country's largest Viking silver hoard
A gardener in Rebild, Denmark, was digging out a new patio when the spade hit something odd. It turned out to be 18.5 kilograms of Viking silver, the largest hoard ever found in the country. The silver had been buried in a clay pot sometime in the 900s and includes about 700 objects: silver bars, bracelets, 47 coins and fragments, and a small Thor's hammer. "It became the biggest surprise of my life," said the finder, who wishes to remain anonymous. Archaeologist Torben Sarauw of Nordjyske Museer called the discovery "like finding a Viking-age safe."
It gives historians studying Viking Denmark a rare, near-intact look at how silver worked as wealth and currency.
