Citizens Advice Caerphilly Blaenau Gwent secured £1,523,115 in additional income for residents and helped get £372,388 of unmanageable debt written off between July and September, 2026. The charity helped 2,197 people across the county borough, dealing with 10,913 individual issues, according to its quarterly impact report.

Among those helped was 66-year-old Amanda, from Caerphilly, whose name has been changed. Her physical and mental health had deteriorated following a personal crisis and several hospital admissions.

An adviser helped her gather medical evidence from a community psychiatric nurse for a reassessment of her Personal Independence Payment (PIP), a benefit with separate rates for daily living and mobility. Amanda moved from the standard daily living rate to the enhanced rate for both daily living and mobility. She received a backdated payment of £1,900 and qualified for a Blue Badge and vehicle tax reductions.

Across the charity’s caseload, 70% of clients reported a disability or long-term health condition. Welfare benefits accounted for 5,330 issues, including 1,506 enquiries about PIP disputes and claims. Debt was the second most common problem, with 1,661 enquiries covering matters including fuel debts and council tax arrears.

Ceri Morgan, operations manager at Citizens Advice Caerphilly Blaenau Gwent, said households continued to feel cost-of-living pressures. “Those managing long-term health conditions often face additional day-to-day costs, including keeping their homes warm,” he said.

He encouraged anyone concerned about money, energy bills or claiming support to seek advice early. Residents can contact the charity through citizensadvicecbg.org.uk/contact/.

Morgan said Pension Credit remained underclaimed and could unlock additional support.
