16 Bear-Smart Communities give Marsican bears room to recover

The LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors initiative, coordinated by Rewilding Europe, has set up 16 Bear-Smart Communities across Italy's Central Apennines over the past five years. Partners worked on damage prevention and habitat improvement, then added monitoring, education and enterprise support for local people. The aim is to let critically endangered Marsican brown bears move more safely out of protected areas and into landscapes where villages and farms sit beside roads. A census published earlier this year put the population at around 81 animals across the known range.
With around 81 Marsican bears and limited room to grow in their historic core, recovery depends on bears and people sharing the surrounding Central Apennines.
