Wild beaver kits born in Norfolk after more than 500 years
Two wild beaver kits, about three months old, have been born on the River Wensum in Norfolk, the first in the county in more than 500 years. Their parents turned up mysteriously at Pensthorpe nature reserve near Fakenham in December and built a lodge on the river. Reserve manager Richard Spowage called the "very playful" kits' arrival "amazing," saying watching the camera trap footage and realizing they had been born brought him real joy. Norfolk's native beavers were hunted to extinction at the start of the 16th century.
It confirms Norfolk has beavers breeding in the wild again, though how this pair got there remains unexplained.
