Volunteer trail crews restore historic footpath bridges and stone staircases across Appalachia

Deep in the rugged backcountry of the Appalachian Mountains, far from any paved roads or motorized machinery, the rhythmic thud of a rock bar and the quiet scrape of a crosscut saw echo through the forest as volunteer trail crews carry on a century-old tradition of wilderness stewardship.
Stretching more than 2,190 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, the Appalachian Trail is the longest continuously maintained hiking-only footpath in the world. Yet despite passing through dozens of federal and state parks, the entire trail is maintained predominantly not by paid government staff, but by an extraordinary network of thirty-one volunteer trail maintaining clubs coordinated by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
Each year, more than six thousand passionate volunteers—ranging from high school students to octogenarian retirees—head into the woods for weekend maintenance trips. Carrying heavy packs filled with hand tools like Pulaskis, axes, and canvas rigging, crews clear fallen timber, clean drainage ditches, and painstakingly construct dry-laid stone staircases designed to endure centuries of hiker footsteps and torrential mountain rainstorms without washing away.
Their tireless manual labor ensures that millions of hikers, day-walkers, and nature lovers can safely immerse themselves in the restorative beauty of eastern wildlands each year. The century-long volunteer stewardship of the Appalachian Trail stands as one of the world's greatest examples of citizen conservation and collective community care.
