Senior dog adoption program provides loving hospice homes and companionship to older pets
Inside a sun-drenched facility in San Francisco, there are no cold metal cages or barking kennel rows. Instead, comfortable velvet couches, soft fleece blankets, and gentle classical music provide a peaceful haven for dozens of gray-muzzled rescue dogs at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.
Founded in 2007 by animal welfare advocate Sherri Franklin, Muttville was created specifically to address one of the most heartbreaking issues in municipal shelters: older dogs, often surrendered due to an owner's hospitalization or lifestyle transition, are frequently overlooked by adopters in favor of young puppies. Muttville rescues dogs aged seven and older from regional shelters, providing complete veterinary diagnostics, dental cleanings, and mobility support before placing them in foster and forever homes.
A central pillar of the organization's success is its 'Seniors for Seniors' program, which pairs older dogs with retired adults. Recognizing that many elderly people living on fixed incomes crave the emotional comfort of a pet but worry about veterinary bills or long-term care commitments, Muttville waives adoption fees and provides ongoing veterinary support and emergency foster guarantees.
The resulting matches offer profound physical and emotional benefits for both dog and human. Retired seniors gain gentle daily walking routines, meaningful purpose, and unconditional love, while senior dogs spend their golden years curled up warmly at their owner's feet. Having placed more than ten thousand senior dogs into loving homes, Muttville has become a national model for compassionate, dignified senior animal care.
