Volunteer group cuts shelter euthanasia rates in Texas county
Kerrville Pets Alive, a nonprofit formed in 2019, has substantially decreased the number of pets euthanized in Kerr County, Texas. The organization is 100% volunteer-run and assists Kerr County Animal Services with funding and volunteers while providing animal welfare resources to the community. Board members serve without compensation. Founder Karen moved to Kerrville from Houston 10 years ago with her husband Layng and three children, ages 23, 20 and 18. After settling in Kerrville, Karen volunteered at Kerr County Animal Services and served on various KISD PTO organizations, as a Director for Kerr County United Way and Chairman of the Kerrville 2050 River Corridor and Parks and Open Spaces Committee. In 2019 she joined forces with other animal advocates to form Kerrville Pets Alive.
A volunteer effort has led to fewer homeless pets being euthanized in Kerr County.
