High school carpentry, electrical, and plumbing apprentices in San Antonio completed construction on five fully furnished tiny homes dedicated to providing permanent shelter for unhoused military veterans.

Working through a specialized vocational education partnership, the teenagers spent the academic year on an active job site mastering professional construction trades. Under the direct supervision of licensed contractor mentors, the students poured concrete pier foundations, framed insulated walls, installed rooftop solar arrays, and plumbed fully functional kitchens and bathrooms. Each 350-square-foot home is designed for complete energy independence and long-term durability.

On September 28, 2026, the student builders handed the front door keys directly to five veterans during an emotional ribbon-cutting ceremony. "These young builders learned life skills while ensuring heroes in our city have a safe, warm bed," a lead vocational instructor reported. One Army veteran recipient wiped away tears as he unlocked his front door, saying, "I finally have a place to call home, built with love by the next generation."

The city housing authority has allocated land for five additional tiny homes, allowing the upcoming class of high school trade apprentices to continue building permanent housing for local veterans in need.

Unhoused veterans move into permanent free shelter built by high school trade students gaining valuable construction careers.
