A grassroots letter-writing partnership connecting seventh-grade students with elderly residents of a nearby nursing home in rural Ohio celebrated its tenth anniversary of continuous friendship this autumn.

Founded by an English teacher and an activities director in 2016, the program pairs each incoming class of middle schoolers with a senior resident to exchange handwritten letters every two weeks. Over the past decade, more than six hundred student-senior pairs have shared stories of childhood memories, historical events, and everyday advice, creating strong bridges across eight decades of age difference.

In September 2026, the school hosted a celebratory banquet where forty students met their ninety-year-old pen pals face-to-face for the first time. The nursing facility director said that "these letters gave our residents purpose and brought wonderful youthful laughter into our halls." One student shared that her ninety-four-year-old partner taught her calligraphy and gave her courage during school exams.

The school district announced plans to archive excerpts of the decade-long correspondence in the county historical museum, preserving a priceless living history of rural Ohio told through intergenerational friendship.

Isolated seniors and middle school students forge deep intergenerational friendships that combat loneliness through regular handwritten letters.
