Rescued orangutan gives birth in wild seven years after rehabilitation
Bulan, a female Sumatran orangutan rescued from illegal wildlife traffickers, was observed nursing a month-old male infant in the forests of northern Sumatra in May 2025. The mother was released into the Jantho Nature Reserve in Aceh province seven years ago after completing rehabilitation. Fieldworkers from the Lestari Ecosystem Foundation confirmed the birth, naming the baby Badar.
The birth shows rehabilitated orangutans can reproduce in the wild, offering hope for endangered species recovery.
