Knights beat Panthers 22-14 to reach first grand final in 25 years

Newcastle beat minor premiers Penrith 22-14 at Accor Stadium on Sunday and are into the NRL grand final for the first time in 25 years. They played down to 12 men and still came from behind. Twelve months earlier, the Knights had collected the wooden spoon. Veteran Dane Gagai called it “one of the greatest wins of my career”. Captain Kalyn Ponga said he had “never experienced anything like that before”.
Newcastle's previous grand final appearances came in 1997 and 2001. This one arrives 12 months after the club collected the wooden spoon.
