Kingsbridge Year 13 Biology students put ecology into practice in Somerset

Year 13 Biology students from Kingsbridge Community College sixth form spent three days on a residential fieldwork trip to Nettlecombe Court, a Grade I listed estate in Somerset. They carried out practical investigations across freshwater and terrestrial habitats, applying concepts studied in the classroom to real-world environments. In riffles and ponds, students examined how flow rate and water movement influence macroinvertebrate communities and observed invertebrate behaviour in the field. On land, they used point quadrats to measure grassland vegetation. They also investigated lichen distribution on gravestones in the historic churchyard, exploring succession and the effects of microclimate and weathering. The trip included a small mammal ecology investigation.
The fieldwork gave students practical experience of sampling biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems and applying ecological concepts outside the classroom.
