Volunteer surfers share the calm and exhilaration of ocean waves with autistic youth

On sunny coastal beaches stretching from Southern California to North Carolina, the rhythm of rolling ocean breakers provides an unexpected sanctuary of calm, confidence, and pure joy for thousands of neurodiverse children.
Founded by professional surfer Izzy Paskowitz and his family after discovering the profound soothing effect the ocean had on their own autistic son, Surfers Healing offers free one-day adaptive surf camps for children with autism and developmental differences. For many neurodivergent individuals who experience sensory overload in everyday environments, the dynamic weightlessness of saltwater and the steady, rhythmic tempo of ocean swells create a deeply grounding sensory experience.
At each camp, seasoned volunteer surf instructors partner one-on-one with young participants, outfitting them in life vests and tandem surfboards. Together, they paddle through the gentle shore break, wait for rolling swells, and glide smoothly toward the beach as cheering families and volunteers applaud from the sand. For many children, catching their very first wave unlocks an unprecedented sense of accomplishment and calm that stays with them long after stepping onto dry land.
The camps are offered completely free of charge to all families, funded entirely through community donations and dedicated volunteer surfers. Parents frequently report that the ocean experience dramatically reduces anxiety, improves non-verbal communication, and creates a welcoming, judgment-free community space where children and families feel unconditionally supported and celebrated.
