Sixty-four baby sea turtles rescued from Florida backyard pool
A family in Islamorada found 64 sea turtle hatchlings in their backyard pool after the animals were disoriented by the home's bright lights. The homeowners contacted The Turtle Hospital for help, knowing the baby turtles would not survive in the chlorinated water. Staff cleaned up the hatchlings and gave them nourishment. After spending several days recovering, all 64 turtles were ready to return to the wild and were released into the ocean. Artificial lighting near beaches is a known threat to newly hatched sea turtles, which instinctively move toward the brightest horizon.
Quick action by residents and wildlife experts gave all 64 hatchlings a second chance at survival.
