Renewables Surpass Coal in Global Electricity Mix for First Time
Renewable energy sources supplied 34 percent of global electricity in 2025, edging past coal at 33 percent for the first time, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from Ember, an independent energy think tank. Wind and solar power together accounted for 17 percent of worldwide electricity in 2025. That is up from less than five percent a decade earlier. Fossil fuels overall still generated 57 percent of global electricity in 2025, down from 65 percent in 2000.
The data shows a measurable decline in coal use for power generation as wind and solar capacity expands across multiple regions.
