Maryland students design devices that let a wheelchair user push a stroller

Upper School students at Bullis School in Maryland designed two devices that let a wheelchair user push a stroller with safety and ease. The project was inspired by a teacher's family and their newborn son, and the students' team, WheeStroll, won two international awards.
In Matt Zigler's Making for Social Good course at Bullis School in Maryland, students are asked to use design thinking and the school's maker lab to meet a real need in their community, not a personal one.
One team found its project close to home. Middle School theatre teacher Chelsie King, her husband Jeremy and their newborn son had a particular need: a way for a wheelchair user to push a stroller. The six students on team WheeStroll invented and designed two working wheelchair-stroller adaptation devices that let a wheelchair user push a stroller with safety and ease. One of the devices used parts the students 3D printed themselves.
The team entered PrintLab's 2021 make:able challenge, an international assistive technology design competition for students. That year's brief was to design and make a product that improves daily life for someone who struggles with mobility in their hands. WheeStroll won two awards, including Best Showcase of Iterative Design.
"We are SO PROUD of this amazing team of students for their ingenuity, collaboration, compassion, and incredible work on behalf of others," the school said.
Students learned engineering by solving a real problem for a family they know.
