Lincolnshire golf course becomes wetland reserve where avocets have nested

A former golf course on the Lincolnshire coast has been turned into a nature reserve. National Trust Sandilands, near Sutton on Sea, opens officially on Saturday after six years of restoration work. The site, equal to 42 football pitches, is wetland and grassland with coastal scrub. Avocets and oystercatchers nested and bred there this year, and little ringed plover chicks were recorded for a second year running. Area ranger Katie Scott said: "Creating this new wetland will extend the safe refuges available to these birds, ensuring they can survive and thrive."
Many of the species at Sandilands are endangered or rare, and they depend on places like this to rest, feed and breed.
