Volunteers Hunt Through Dirt To Save Australia's Rarest Orchids

Image: abc.net.au (article citation)

Dozens of volunteers gathered in a small green shed about an hour outside Melbourne to dig through pots of one of Australia's rarest wild orchids. With freezing fingers, they tipped dirt onto a white plastic table and rummaged for large root-like tubers. Alex McLachlan held up roots to show the group how to spot next year's tuber. "You can tell that because it's white and thick and flush," he said. McLachlan had been there since early morning preparing the purple-flowered plants for planting.

Volunteers across the country are working to keep endangered native orchid species from disappearing.
