Room Temperature Vaccine Stays Stable for a Year in UK Trial
A tetanus-diphtheria vaccine remained stable as a dry powder at room temperature for a year, then worked normally after being mixed with water and injected into 60 volunteers. UK company Stablepharma ran the trial with funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research. The technology borrows from resurrection plants, which survive droughts by using a sugar called trehalose to protect their cells. Around half of all vaccines worldwide are wasted because they spoil when they get too hot or too cold during storage and transport.
The technology could prevent billions of wasted vaccine doses and make it possible to vaccinate people in remote areas that lack reliable refrigeration.
