Robots start rolling through Hoboken to check sidewalk accessibility
Small robots called Daxbots began traveling Hoboken, New Jersey sidewalks at walking speed on Monday, July 13, gathering engineering data on curb ramps, push buttons, crosswalks and park pathways. Equipped with precision lasers, GPS technology and an inclinometer, they measure sidewalk width, vertical changes and curb conditions. City officials said the Daxbots will be supervised at all times and will wear high-visibility vests; the robots are relatively short and yield to pedestrians. "They are literally out there to check the conditions of our sidewalks and how passable they may or may not be," Mayor Emily Jabbour said.
