Pakistan creates new sanctuary for 2000 endangered river dolphins
The Government of Punjab established the Punjnad Indus River Dolphin Sanctuary, covering about 123 miles of the Indus River where five rivers meet. The protected area safeguards habitat for nearly two-thirds of the 660 Indus River dolphins living in Punjab. The sanctuary connects with an existing protected area in Sindh Province, creating roughly 249 miles of legally protected habitat.
It protects one of the world's rarest freshwater dolphins whose population declined 80% over a century.
