Orphaned baby giraffe Twiggy rescued in Tsavo East with lions nearby

An infant giraffe with no mother was found in the Ngutuni area of Tsavo East National Park as dusk approached, and lions were not far away. The SWT/KWS Burra Anti-Poaching Team tracked her, and KWS requested a rescue. The Field Works Manager leapt from a slow-moving vehicle and restrained her. Named Twiggy, she reached the Voi Reintegration Unit and drank a bottle of milk without hesitation. Keepers spent the next week brushing her from atop a bunk in her stockade. She loved the attention.
The plan is to raise Twiggy at the Kaluku Neonate Nursery in the Tsavo Conservation Area, among other orphans and in country also frequented by giraffes.
