New seahorse species from Indian Ocean named after UBC marine biologist

Researchers discovered a new seahorse species, Hippocampus amandavincentae, in fish bycatch at Tuticorin harbour in southern India. The 16-centimetre fish, which scientists encountered for over a century without recognising it as distinct, was named after Dr. Amanda Vincent of UBC for her marine conservation work. The species likely ranges across the Indian Ocean from Mozambique to the Red Sea to India.

The discovery highlights how new species can hide in plain sight and honors decades of seahorse conservation efforts.
