New Orleans churches become solar‑powered hubs for blackout relief

Sixteen Community Lighthouses are already operating across New Orleans, pairing solar panels with battery storage to keep lights on when the grid fails. Together New Orleans says the network is the nation’s largest collection of resilience hubs. When the full complement of 86 sites is complete, every resident will be within a 15‑minute walk of one. The effort also creates jobs that pay living wages for local workers.
Families who lose power during storms will have a nearby solar‑and‑battery refuge, and the construction phase provides living‑wage jobs for local workers.
