Hoboken sends mapping robots onto sidewalks to collect accessibility data
Hoboken, New Jersey started rolling out Daxbot robots on Monday to measure sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks and park pathways across the city. The robots travel at walking speed and use precision lasers, GPS technology and an inclinometer to gather engineering measurements on sidewalk width, vertical changes and curb conditions. City officials said the Daxbots, funded by a federal grant under the Vision Zero initiative, will be supervised at all times and wear high-visibility vests. Mayor Emily Jabbour said the robots are checking how passable the sidewalks may or may not be.
The measurements will help the city improve ADA accessibility for residents with mobility challenges and disabilities under its Accessibility Action Plan.
