Dog swept 200 metres offshore rescued at South African beach
An Australian Shepherd named Bean was pulled from the water off Pollok Beach in Gqeberha, South Africa, on Saturday afternoon after a rip current carried him 200 metres out to sea. The National Sea Rescue Institute launched rescue craft Rescue 6 Alpha at 2.52pm while coastal water rescue swimmers responded from shore. Lifeguards from Pollok Beach and a bystander on a Malibu rescue board had already paddled out to help. NSRI rescue swimmer Mike Vermeulen entered the water half a kilometre offshore, secured Bean, and brought him aboard. The dog, appearing hypothermic, was wrapped in blankets and warmed by the swimmer's body heat before being taken to the NSRI Gqeberha rescue station, where warming procedures continued. Bean was then returned to his family.
The rescue showed how lifeguards, volunteer rescuers, and bystanders can work together to save a pet caught in dangerous ocean currents.
