Dog swept 200 meters out to sea rescued at South African beach
An Australian Shepherd named Bean was pulled from the ocean at Pollok Beach in Gqeberha, South Africa, on Saturday afternoon after a rip current carried him 200 meters offshore. The National Sea Rescue Institute Gqeberha duty crew, already on station for routine training, responded at 2:52 pm. Lifeguards launched from the beach and a bystander paddled out on a Malibu rescue board. Half a kilometer offshore, NSRI rescue swimmer Mike Vermeulen entered the water, secured Bean, and brought him aboard the rescue craft. Bean appeared hypothermic and was wrapped in blankets and warmed by body heat before being taken to the NSRI Gqeberha rescue station for further warming procedures.
A family pet survived being washed far offshore because trained rescuers and a volunteer acted fast.
