AI helps London surgeons remove brain tumour and save patient's sight
Surgeons at London's National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery used AI software during a May operation to remove an 11mm tumour from Rhys Hibbert's pituitary gland. The system analysed live camera footage and colour-coded nerves and blood vessels that needed to be avoided. The surgical team stayed in full control. Hibbert, 48, could see clearly when he woke up. He walked without glasses or sticks within a week and has returned to his job as a customer service manager. The hospital had used the technology as a research tool before but this was the first time it was used on a patient.
The surgery shows AI can help surgeons identify critical brain structures during operations. That may make tumor removal safer for other patients.
