The Sydney Opera House opened on Bennelong Point
On 20 October 1973, the Sydney Opera House was formally opened, celebrating one of the twentieth century architecture and acoustic landmarks.
Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the facility required pioneering engineering solutions to construct its precast concrete shell sails over Sydney Harbour. Ove Arup and Partners developed early structural computer models to solve the geometric calculations for the roof design.
Since its opening, the performing arts centre has welcomed millions of visitors annually, hosting concerts, opera, and theatre while standing as a UNESCO World Heritage site and an international symbol of creative engineering.
