Astronomers mapped the Sloan Great Wall across one billion light years

On 20 October 2003, researchers analyzing data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey announced the discovery of the Sloan Great Wall, a massive cosmic filament of galaxies stretching 1.37 billion light years.

The Sloan Great Wall was identified by J. Richard Gott III, Mario Jurić, and colleagues at Princeton University using three-dimensional position data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The structure consists of several superclusters linked together across deep space.

Spanning approximately one-sixtieth the diameter of the observable universe, the filament provided astronomers with important early evidence for the large-scale web structure of cosmic matter and dark matter distribution.
